DoorDash has come to an agreement to buy Instacart for $17 billion. The deal is expected to close in late 2027 or early 2028.
That’s a big discount from 5 years ago, when DoorDash was in talks to buy Instacart for $40-$50 billion during the frothy pandemic-fueled delivery era. Talk about waiting for a discount before ordering!
In recent years, DoorDash has tried to enter the grocery delivery business organically, but has struggled to compete with Instacart.
It’s the latest acquisition for DoorDash, after buying international delivery services like Wolt and Deliveroo.
DoorDash plans to continue Instacart as a standalone app. It does plan to merge DashPass with Instacart+, so that one membership will cover both apps. That may save some consumers money if they pay for both, though many get those free thanks to credit card perks.
Industry consolidation will likely end up costing consumers in the long run, as the companies won’t have to offer as many promos, discounted gift cards, or credit card perks to compete.
Costco stores and Costco.com sell discounted DoorDash and Uber/Uber Eats gift cards. Sadly, discounted Instacart gift cards are no longer offered through Costco.
The battle between DoorDash, Instacart, and Uber Eats has fueled a steady stream of promo codes, and just last month DoorDash and Uber Eats expanded their Costco delivery options to take on Instacart. Here’s hoping Uber Eats keeps the competition alive.
Credit Card Benefits For DoorDash:
Add your eligible Chase card to your DoorDash account to activate DashPass and your monthly promos here. You must pay with that Chase card to get the promos, and each Chase promo can be stacked with one other DoorDash promo code.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve®: DashPass through 12/31/29 (or for 12 months, whichever is longer), a $15 monthly promo on any order, plus two $10 monthly promos on non-restaurant orders. That’s up to $35 per month, or $420 per year, on top of DashPass, which normally costs $9.99/month. JPMorgan Reserve cardholders get the same benefits.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business℠: DashPass through 12/31/27 (or for 12 months, whichever is longer), a $5 monthly restaurant promo, plus two $10 monthly promos on non-restaurant orders, for up to $25 per month.
- Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card: DashPass through 12/31/29 (or for 12 months, whichever is longer), plus a $10 monthly promo on non-restaurant orders.

- Chase co-brand cards, such as United, Southwest, IHG, Marriott, World of Hyatt, Aeroplan, British Airways, and Disney cards: 12 months of DashPass when you activate by 12/31/27. If you activate DashPass for the first time between 9/1/26 and 12/31/27, you’ll get a $10 monthly promo on non-restaurant orders. If you activated between 2/1/25 and 8/31/26, you get a $10 quarterly promo instead. The Amazon Rewards Visa, Instacart Mastercard, and DoorDash Rewards Mastercard aren’t eligible.
Only 1 DashPass membership can be tied to a DoorDash account, so if you have both a business and a consumer Chase card, you can open a separate DoorDash account for each to use both sets of promos. Once a free DashPass period from one Chase card ends, you can add another eligible Chase card to start a new one.
Unused promos expire at the end of each month or quarter. DoorDash also recently added the ability to choose which Sapphire promo to apply to each order.
