You can keep your laptop and small liquids inside your carry-on. And you go through a good old fashioned metal detector instead of assuming the position in the body scanner. If you charge it on your card the fee will be refunded.
It costs $120 to apply for a 5 year Global Entry membership which lets you bypass the customs line. If you have Global Entry you also get TSA Pre-Check for free. If you charge it on your card the fee will be refunded. Kids can now apply for Global Entry for free with parents who are part of the program.
It costs $120 to apply for a 5 year NEXUS membership and it includes PreCheck and Global Entry. If you charge it on your card the fee will be refunded.
That’s a $120 value every 4 years.
You can read more about the differences in this post.
My whole family has Global Entry and it sure makes traveling a whole lot easier!
Using AA Miles:
While Delta and United have killed off their award charts and increased miles needed for flights, American has retained published partner award charts, though their own flights are now dynamic.
When Delta and United eliminated their close-in award booking fees, they increased the miles needed for flights. American also removed their close-in booking fees, but they haven’t yet increased the miles needed for close-in flights.
American also has a very useful award map here to help find cheap awards.
American also has extremely valuable partner awards on airlines like Alaska, Aer Lingus, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Fiji, Finnair, GOL, Iberia, JAL, Qantas, Qatar, Royal Air Maroc, Porter, Air Tahiti Nui, and more. Some partner flights must be booked over the phone.

Virtual card numbers:
With a virtual card number, you can set a dollar limit and/or expiration date to generate a one-time use credit card number so that you don’t keep getting charged for subscriptions or have your real card number stolen, among myriad other potential uses.
Card Convertibility:
You can convert this card to most Citi consumer cards after your first cardmembership year.
Dan’s Quick Thoughts:
With Household Admirals Club rates now at a whopping $1,400 per year, this card is still a no-brainer if you want AA club access.
And with 3 authorized users, the total cost will be just $870 for all 4 memberships instead of paying $5,600 to American without a card. At $192.50/person, that’s actually a great deal on Admirals Club Membership.
It’s a worthwhile card just for the excellent signup bonus, as AA miles are quite valuable.
The Avis/Budget credit is a useful credit as it can be used in one shot.
The AA vacations credit can add value, especially if you can pull off a free trip out of it.
The card is also a great deal if you want to earn AA elite status thanks to up to 40,000 annual bonus loyalty points.
However, if you just want to earn miles, you’ll be better off with a no annual fee Citi Double Cash® Card, which earns an effective 2 Citi ThankYou® Points per dollar spent everywhere. View Rates & Fees here. Read more about the Double Cash card here.
The no annual fee Citi Strata℠ Card also has excellent spending categories. View Rates & Fees here. Read more about the Strata card here.
While those no annual fee cards can only transfer points to American at a 1:0.7 ratio, you will be able to transfer points from those cards to American at a 1:1 ratio if you also have The Citi Strata Premier® Card (View Rates & Fees here) or with The Citi Strata Elite℠ Card (View Rates & Fees here) which also have lucrative signup bonuses, spending categories, and card perks. Read more about Strata Premier here and more about Strata Elite here.
If you have those card combos, it would mean that you are trading 2 points per dollar spent everywhere for 1 mile per dollar, plus 1 loyalty point per dollar and the rewards that come with the loyalty point tiers.
If you just want to rack up the miles, the Double Cash + Strata Elite/Strata Premier will earn miles faster, but if you want elite status, spending on AA cards will be the way to go.
It’s also worth noting that this card has no foreign transaction fees, while Double Cash does have 3% foreign transaction fees.
